First Daffodils

Early daffodils are blooming in sunny places. It has been one of the mildest winters on record, with many 60-degree-plus days. A respected local garden center has been telling customers it's ok to start planting early seeds, according to an article in the News & Observer.

Excuse the poor quality of this smartphone photo.
I have missed blogging and reading blogs lately as I adjust to a new schedule with my new job. We also are getting ready to put our house (garden!) on the market in a month, so free time has disappeared. But I'm going to try to find a way to blog despite the busyness because I've so enjoyed hearing from other gardeners and nature lovers and responding to your blog posts. I'd appreciate your tips on how to blog in small chunks of time!

Some of my daffodils are budding...in January! We have had such a mild winter that so many plants are beginning their spring growth. Although I enjoy it, I just hope...should we have a major winter storm or cold snap it won't be too damaging to all of that new growth.

Here in Ireland it's been the mildest January since 1953.

I worry about putting things out so early, as February is such an unpredictable month. My daffodils are not yet blooming - I'm so anxious! Good luck with getting the house on the market, and giving up the garden. I hope the next place will have perfect soil!

Our daffodils are up too. Good luck getting you house sold! Every time we moved I was more sad about leaving my garden than the house. I hope you find someone that likes to garden.

I have mixed feelings, too. It's the first winter that i've not been delighted at the first daffodils. I worry they're premature and also that theyre a warning sign of global warming.

In the northeast u.s. it's been the 4th mildest winter in 117 years.

Yes, I wouldn't set plants out yet, but I might scatter a few lettuce seeds for fun.

Ah, the dream of perfect soil! I'd settle for a few inches of any kind of soil as long as it's not solid red clay.

I know, I hope that a gardener buys the house. I don't even want to think about someone thoughtlessly tearing out all the plants and installing sod.

I have daffodils budding and hyacinths blooming. I just hope we don't have some real winter weather in March!

We have a foot of snow still on the ground. But I'm encouraged by seeing the lovely Daffodils on your blog! Thanks!

I will not see daffs for a couple more months. We finally got more than a dusting of snow. Weeds were growing though, but with the snow I bet they are doomed now. I think that global warming is causing all this mild weather. I fear what summer will bring.
